Computer-delivered IELTS runs up to seven days a week, in up to three sessions a day, so IELTS in India is held hundreds of times a year. Paper-based IELTS ran on fixed test dates, up to four a month, until IDP IELTS India ended it after 29 August 2026. The test calendar sets which days each mode and each module, IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, runs at each center.
This page counts yearly dates, then covers 2026 dates by month, mode, module and city, the next date, 2027 and booking against a deadline. Registration steps and fees sit on the registration page. Every date was checked against IDP IELTS India on 7 October 2026, and seats change daily.
How Many Times Is the IELTS Exam Conducted in a Year?

There’s no single yearly number, because computer test sessions run up to three times a day, up to seven days a week, while paper ran only on fixed dates. India got 30 paper dates in 2026 before paper ended in August, and 15 of them carried General Training. IELTS for UKVI is now computer-only. With no retake limit, date spacing is the only cap on resits. Each mode and module has its own count of test opportunities.
| Delivery mode and module | How often it runs | Approximate test days a year | Typical days of the week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer-delivered IELTS Academic | Up to three test sessions a day, up to seven days a week | Varies by center; major centers list about four to six days weekly | Sunday, Thursday and Saturday at almost every center, plus most weekdays |
| Computer-delivered IELTS General Training | Shares every computer session with Academic; you pick the module at booking | Same as Academic, because both modules sit in the same sessions | Same days as Academic at each center, weekend slots included |
| Paper-based IELTS Academic | Fixed national dates, up to four a month, until paper ended in August 2026 | 30 fixed dates in India from 10 January to 29 August 2026 | Mostly Saturdays, plus a Thursday date in May, July and August |
| Paper-based IELTS General Training | Ran on selected fixed dates, about two a month, until August 2026 | 15 of the 30 India paper dates in 2026 | Mostly Saturdays; Thursday 7 May and Thursday 6 August also carried it |
| IELTS for UKVI (computer and paper) | Runs in computer sessions at UKVI-approved centers; no paper version remains | Varies by center; check the UKVI center list on IDP IELTS India | Set by each UKVI-approved center and shown in the booking portal |

Which Dates Are Available for Computer-Delivered IELTS?
Computer-delivered IELTS is available most days of the week, in up to three test sessions a day, at IDP computer centers across India. No national list of computer dates exists. Each center opens its own sessions, and the booking portal shows live seat availability for every one.
Your Speaking test slot can sit on the same day as Listening, Reading and Writing or up to seven days either side, per IDP IELTS India. Most computer results arrive within 1 to 2 days. One Skill Retake runs only on computer and must be booked within 60 days of your first test. See how IELTS on computer works on test day.
Which Dates Are Available for Paper-Based IELTS?
No paper-based IELTS dates remain in India. The fixed calendar offered up to four dates a month, mostly Saturday test dates with three Thursday test dates, and stopped after 29 August 2026. Every paper center tested on the same fixed test dates, so a missed date could only move to the next one.
The result timeline was 7 calendar days in India, against 1 to 2 days on computer, and Speaking could fall up to a week either side. Handwriters now book IELTS (Writing on Paper) in computer sessions. Read what IELTS on paper involved.
Are IELTS Academic and General Training Exam Dates the Same?
No, not on paper: IELTS Academic ran on every paper-based date, while IELTS General Training ran only on selected test dates, 15 of India’s 30 in 2026. On computer both modules share the same sessions.
That gap hit migration applicants hardest, since they had half the paper dates. Your module choice is made at booking, and IELTS for UKVI runs at its own approved centers. Compare the two in IELTS Academic vs General Training.
Do IELTS Exam Dates in India Differ by City?
Yes, the national calendar is the same, but each city only offers the dates and sessions its own centers have opened, so the same date can be full in Delhi and open in Chandigarh. On 7 October 2026, Kochi already showed 13 October dates full.
Punjab test centers in Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Bathinda see heavy demand and weekend slots go first, so check seat availability in a nearby city. City-wise dates run as follows.
| City | Computer-delivered available (yes/no) | Paper-based available (yes/no) | How often computer sessions run |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | Yes, two centers | No, ended August 2026 | About six days a week |
| Mumbai | Yes, one center | No, ended August 2026 | About five to six days a week |
| Bengaluru | Yes, two centers | No, ended August 2026 | About six days a week |
| Chennai | Yes, one center | No, ended August 2026 | About five days a week |
| Hyderabad | Yes, two centers | No, ended August 2026 | About six days a week |
| Chandigarh | Yes, two centers | No, ended August 2026 | About six to seven days a week |

| Pune | Yes, one center | No, ended August 2026 | About five days a week |
| Jalandhar | Yes, one center | No, ended August 2026 | About four days a week |

How Do You Find the Next IELTS Exam Date?
Open the IDP IELTS India booking portal, choose the module, the delivery mode and your city, and the first date with open seats is your next IELTS exam date. The portal reads live center calendars, so it beats any printed list. Six steps get you from the portal’s home screen to a held seat.
- Choose IELTS Academic, General Training or IELTS for UKVI, matching what your university, employer or visa route asks for.
- Choose computer-delivered or paper-based; since paper ended in August 2026, handwriting now means IELTS (Writing on Paper).
- Select your city and nearby centers, because a center an hour away often has an earlier next available date.
- Read the first date that shows open seats; dates already marked full are skipped by the calendar.
- Check the Speaking slot attached to that date, which can fall up to seven days before or after it.
- Hold the date by completing booking; the form, ID and fee steps are on our IELTS registration page.
What Are the IELTS Exam Dates for 2027?
No 2027 IELTS dates are published yet, and no 2027 paper calendar will appear, because IDP has discontinued paper-based IELTS in India. The 2027 test calendar will be computer sessions that open on a rolling basis. On 7 October 2026, published dates at major centers ran to 31 December 2026.
If your intake deadline falls between January and March 2027, plan around late-2026 rolling sessions, which you can book now.
When Should You Book Upcoming IELTS Exam Dates?

Book 4 to 8 weeks before the test date you want, and choose a test date that leaves time for the result, for sending the score and for one retake before your application deadline.
Peak season in India runs before the September and January intakes, so open your booking window early. Start IELTS mock test practice weeks before the chosen date. The table works back to your latest safe test date with a retake buffer, as planning guidance rather than an official rule.
| Step | Computer-delivered IELTS | Paper-based IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| Book the date – 4 to 8 weeks ahead in peak months | Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead; weekend slots fill first in peak months | No paper dates remain; the last fixed date was 29 August 2026 |
| Sit the test | Pick any listed session; Speaking can fall up to seven days either side | Handwriters now sit IELTS (Writing on Paper) inside computer test sessions |
| Receive the result – days on computer, about 13 days on paper | Results arrive online within 1 to 2 days, per IDP IELTS India | Was 7 calendar days in India; Writing on Paper now gets 1 to 2 days |
| Send the score to the university or visa authority | Allow time for each university or visa authority to receive and log it | Same as computer, since every result now arrives online the same way |
| Buffer for one retake if the band falls short | Allow about two to three weeks to rebook, resit and get the result | Paper resits are gone, so plan any retake in a computer session |
| Latest safe test date before the deadline | Deadline minus about 4 weeks: planning guidance, not an official IELTS rule | Deadline minus about 6 weeks applied to paper, which no longer has dates |

When Do IELTS Results Arrive for 2026 Exam Dates?
The result times depend on the delivery mode: computer-delivered results arrive within 1 to 2 days of the test date, and paper-based results arrived about 7 days after it. Online results come first, and the Test Report Form follows. That result lag sets your result date in the first line of the plan above. See how IELTS results are released.
Is IELTS Valid for 5 Years After Your Exam Date?
No, an IELTS result is generally accepted for two years from the test date, not five, so the date you book also starts the validity clock. That two-year validity matters for booking: test too early and score expiry can hit before a later visa or PR step. A receiving organization can set a shorter window. See IELTS score validity.
How Does IELTS Registration 2026 Work?
The registration steps are online booking on the IDP IELTS India portal, ID upload, fee payment and a confirmation email that fixes your test and Speaking slots. Your passport details must match the booking exactly. IDP sends the final booking confirmation five to seven days before the test. The documents and fee are on our IELTS registration page.
Is Computer-Delivered IELTS Faster to Book Than Paper?
Yes, computer-delivered IELTS usually gets you both an earlier test date and an earlier result, because sessions run most days and results take 1 to 2 days, not paper’s 7. Paper-based IELTS has ended in India, so for handwritten answers book IELTS (Writing on Paper). Compare IELTS paper vs computer.
