Overview

The IELTS Speaking test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. It measures how well you express ideas, holds conversations, and respond to questions using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation—skills needed for real-life, academic, or professional situations.

🕒 Duration:

  • Total time: 11–14 minutes
  • The entire Speaking test is an interview conducted with an examiner (face-to-face) or via video call.

📋 Format:

  • 3 sections (the format is the same for both Academic and General Training)

🧩 Section 1: Introduction and Interview (4–5 minutes)

  • The examiner introduces themselves and asks you general questions about : Your name, where you live, studies/work, hobbies, interests, family, and other familiar topics.
  • Questions are designed to help you speak naturally and comfortably.

🧩 Section 2: Long Turn (3–4 minutes)

  • You receive a task card with a specific topic.
  • 1 minute is provided to prepare and take notes.
  • You must then speak on the topic for 1–2 minutes.
  • Afterward, the examiner may ask a couple of follow-up questions.

🧩 Section 3: Discussion (4–5 minutes)

  • The examiner asks more complex and abstract questions related to the topic in Section 2.
  • This section allows for a more detailed discussion, where you’re expected to express opinions, justify answers, and provide examples.

📚 Differences Between Academic and General Training:

  • No difference in the Speaking section between Academic and General Training
  • Both have the same format and topics

🌍 Test Environment:

  • IELTS Speaking is a one-on-one interview with a certified examiner.
  • The test can be conducted face-to-face in a quiet room or via video call.
  • The examiner manages the duration; the test is not visibly timed.
  • Format, questions, and scoring are the same, regardless of the test method.

🎯 Skills Assessed:

  • Fluency and Coherence: Ability to speak clearly, naturally, and logically without unnecessary hesitation.
  • Lexical Resource: Range and accuracy of vocabulary used.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Use of diverse grammatical structures and accuracy in sentence formation.
  • Pronunciation: Clarity and ease of understanding your spoken English.

📊 Scoring:

  • IELTS Speaking is scored on a Band scale (0–9).
  • Scores are based on four criteria:
