Overview
The Map and Plan Labelling (Without Choices) task in the IELTS Listening test checks your ability to understand spoken directions and descriptions of places.
In this task, you will see a map or plan (such as a building layout, park, or street). Some places on the map are marked with numbers, and you must write the correct word or phrase to label each one.
You will not be given any answer options, so you need to listen carefully and write the exact words you hear in the recording. The speaker will describe the location of each place, often using directional language (like “next to,” “on the right,” or “opposite”
This task usually appears in Section 2 of the Listening test and requires you to match spoken information to a visual layout.

- Study the map or plan first Look for entrances, compass directions (N/S/E/W), and any labelled points.
- Listen for directions Focus on words like left, right, next to, opposite, and past to follow locations.
- Follow the speaker’s path Imagine moving through the map with the speaker as they describe it.
- Use known points as clues The speaker often refers to known places to describe new ones.
- Write what you hear Use correct spelling and stick to the words from the recording.
- Don’t panic if you miss one Keep listening. Answers usually follow the same order as the speaker’s description.
