Short Answers

Answer questions briefly using exact words from the recording

Overview

You are required to listen to a recording and answer questions using a few words or numbers (usually no more than one to three words). These questions are usually factual and based on specific details heard in the recording.

✅Key Characteristics :

You need to write a short answer using information you hear in the recording.

Questions are usually about facts (e.g. time, date, number, place, name).

Commonly found in Section 1 and Section 2 of the test.

You must follow the word limit (e.g. NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER).

Answers must be spelled correctly to get the mark.

Use only the words you hear – do not change or add extra words.

Grammar matters – write answers that make grammatical sense.

Pay close attention to key details such as prices, dates, and addresses.

There is no negative marking, so always attempt an answer.

Listen carefully for paraphrasing – the question may use different words than the audio.

⭐️Important Tips :

Be aware of distractors — The speaker might change their mind, correct themselves, or give extra information.

Read the questions before listening — This helps you predict the type of information to listen for.

Underline keywords — Focus on words that signal the type of answer needed (e.g., "What time...?" "Where does...?").

Listen for synonyms/paraphrases — The words in the audio may not exactly match the question.

Write brief, clear answers — Stick to the word limit and check spelling and grammar.
