Overview

In the IELTS Reading Short Answer Questions task, you are given a set of questions that require short answers based on the reading passage.

These questions usually focus on facts, names, numbers, places, or specific details. You must write your answers using words taken directly from the passage.

✅ Key characteristics :

  • You are given direct questions based on information in the reading passage.
  • Your answers must be short and factual, usually 1–3 words or a number.
  • A word limit is clearly stated (e.g., No more than three words and/or a number). You must follow it exactly.
  • Answers must come directly from the passage. Do not use your own words or background knowledge.
  • Questions usually focus on specific details, such as names, places, dates, reasons, or facts.
  • You need to locate the answers by scanning the passage for keywords and related information.
  • Spelling must be correct, as incorrect spelling will be marked wrong.
  • Answers do not need full sentences. Only the correct words or numbers are required.
  • This task tests your ability to find and understand specific information quickly and accurately.

  • Start with the questions — Read the questions first to know what to search for.
  • Underline keywords — Focus on names, dates, numbers, or unique terms in the question and passage.
  • Scan to locate information — Quickly find where the answer is in the passage.
  • Read closely around keywords — Read a few lines before and after to find the exact answer.
  • Match meanings, not just words — Recognize paraphrases and synonyms in the question and passage.
  • Stick to the word limit — E.g., “No more than two words” means one or two words only—nothing extra.
  • Copy exactly from the text — Don’t use your own words; keep spelling and word form accurate.
  • Don’t overthink — Choose the clearest, shortest possible answer—no full sentences.
  • Manage your time — Aim for around 1 minute per question; move on if you’re stuck.
