Summary Completion WOC

Fill in a summary using exact words from the reading passage.

Overview

In the IELTS Reading Summary Completion (without a word list) task, you will see a short summary with some missing words.

The summary is based on part of the reading passage, and your job is to fill in the blanks using words from the passage.

There is no box of words to choose from, so you need to find the answers yourself by reading the text.

The instructions will tell you how many words you can use (for example: No more than two words and/or a number), and it’s very important to follow that limit.

Key Characteristics :

  • You are given a short summary of part of the reading passage with some words missing.
  • You need to find the answers yourself from the passage. There are no options to choose from.
  • Read that section carefully and choose the exact words from the passage that fit the blanks.
  • Read the instructions carefully and stay within the word limit (e.g., No more than two words and/or a number).
  • This task checks how well you understand the main points and details in the passage.
  • You should skim the passage to find the right section and scan for the correct words.

⭐️ Important Tips:

  • Get a general idea of the topic, understand the topic and guess what kind of words (noun, verb, number, etc.) are needed for each blank.
  • Skim the passage to find the section that matches the summary.
  • The summary often uses different words than the passage. Focus on the meaning—not just matching keywords
  • Take words directly from the passage—do not change their form. Make sure your answers fit grammatically and logically into the summary.
  • After filling the gaps, read the full summary again to check if it makes sense.
