Label a diagram using information from the reading passage.

Overview

In the IELTS Reading Diagram Completion task, you will see a labeled diagram related to a process, structure, machine, or something described in the passage.

Some labels or parts will be missing, and your job is to fill in these blanks using the correct words from the reading passage, staying within the given word limit (e.g., “No more than two words”).

  • The diagram usually shows a process, structure, device, or part of a system (e.g., a machine, the human body, a map, etc.).
  • A word limit is provided (e.g., No more than two words and/or a number), and you must follow it exactly.
  • You must take the words directly from the passage. Do not use your own words or change word forms.
  • The missing labels are usually nouns or noun phrases that name or describe parts of the diagram.
  • The relevant information may not be in one place—you may need to look across several parts of the passage.
  • Skimming helps you find the right section quickly, and scanning helps you locate the exact words needed.
  • This task tests your ability to understand descriptions and visual information and link them correctly to the diagram.

  • Check the word limit and follow it exactly.
  • Skim the passage and Scan for details that match the missing parts.
  • Use keywords to find the right section, and scan for specific words or phrases that match the blanks
  • Use exact words from the text—no changes or guesses. Avoid using your own words, guessing, or exceeding the word limit.
  • Make sure your answer fits logically and grammatically.
  • Watch out for paraphrasing—the diagram may use different wording.
  • Double-check spelling and word count before moving on.
