Matching Features

Match items or names with correct details from the reading passage.

Overview

In the IELTS Reading Matching Features task, you are given a list of features (e.g., people, places, events, or ideas) and a set of statements or descriptions.

Your job is to match each feature to the correct statement. Each feature may match more than one statement or only one.

To do this effectively, first, carefully read all the features and statements. Then, skim and scan the passage to find the information related to each feature.

Example of sample question

✅Key characteristics :

  • You are given a list of items (e.g., names, places, dates, or categories) and a set of features or statements.
  • Your task is to match each statement or feature to the correct item based on the information in the passage.
  • The information may be spread across the passage, not in one section, so you may need to search different parts of the text.
  • The same item may be used more than once, or sometimes only once, depending on the instructions.
  • You must understand specific details and relationships between people, places, events, or ideas.
  • This task often includes names of people or groups, and you need to match what they did, said, or believed.
  • Skimming and scanning skills are important to find and compare information quickly.
  • You must match meaning, not just similar words, as the wording in the passage may be different from the question.
  • Carefully follow the instructions, especially if an item can be used more than once or only once.
  • This task tests your ability to read for detail, compare information, and understand relationships between features.

⭐️ Important Tips :

  • Focus on identifying key details that connect the features to the statements.
  • If unsure, use the process of elimination to narrow down your choices, and always double-check your answers to ensure that each feature is matched accurately.
  • You should avoid rushing through the task; take the time to understand each feature and statement.
  • Don’t get distracted by irrelevant details, and don’t assume the first matching feature is always the right one. If stuck, try to guess rather than leaving answers blank.
  • Look for unique clues – even small clues (a different opinion or role) can help
  • Be careful about dealing with similar features or statements that only differ slightly, identifying misleading details that may appear correct but aren’t.
  • Manage time effectively as this task can be time-consuming with multiple features to match. _
