Plans change after you book IELTS. A visa interview moves, an illness lands the week of the test, or a university deadline shifts. When that happens you don’t lose your seat. An IELTS exam reschedule moves your booked test to a new date through your IDP or British Council account, and the rule that decides the reschedule fee is a single deadline.

Request the change more than 5 weeks before the test and you usually pay only an administrative fee; closer than that and the change can be treated as a cancellation. This guide defines what rescheduling is, sets out the deadlines, walks the process, breaks down the cost, covers refunds, and lists the rules.

What Is an IELTS Exam Reschedule?

An IELTS exam reschedule is the act of moving your already-booked IELTS test to a new date or centre while keeping the same booking. You log in to the account you booked with, choose a fresh slot, and your test transfers to it. Rescheduling is sometimes called a transfer date change, because the booking itself survives and only the date moves.

A reschedule differs from a cancellation. When you cancel, you give up the test seat entirely and ask for a refund. When you reschedule, you keep the booking and simply shift it forward. The deadline that governs both is the same five-week cut-off, but the outcome — a new test date versus money back — is what sets them apart.

What Are the Key IELTS Reschedule Deadlines?

The one deadline that matters is whether you request the change more than 5 weeks before your test date. Request a reschedule earlier than that cut-off and the test transfers for an administrative fee only. The British Council and IDP both treat the five-week mark as the line between a cheap change and an expensive one.

Once you pass that cut-off, the rules tighten. A request made nearer than five weeks may incur a higher charge or be treated as a cancellation rather than a clean transfer. That means you can lose much of what you paid. IDP India adds a second condition: you can only transfer if the new test date sits at least nine days from the day you apply, so a last-week request can remove the option entirely.

How Do You Reschedule an IELTS Exam?

Rescheduling runs entirely through the account you booked with, and the five steps below take you from login to a confirmed new date.

  1. Log in to your IDP or British Council account using the email and password you used to book the test. Your IDP account or British Council account holds the booking you need to change.
  2. Open your test booking from your dashboard and select the option to transfer or change the date.
  3. Select a new available date and centre from the slots the portal shows for your module.
  4. Pay any applicable transfer fee, which depends on how far ahead of the original date you request the new date.
  5. Receive your updated confirmation by email, showing the new date, time and test centre.

How Much Does an IELTS Exam Reschedule Cost?

The reschedule fee depends on timing, not on your reason. Moving your test more than 5 weeks before the date usually costs only an administrative fee, while changes inside that window cost more or are treated as a cancellation. Your test provider sets the exact administrative fee, and it varies by country. Confirm the current figure on your IDP or British Council booking page before you commit, since the live figure may differ.

Because these charges change, treat any figure you see as time-sensitive and check the live amount on the day you request the transfer.

Can You Cancel Your IELTS and Get a Refund?

Yes — you can cancel your IELTS booking, and a refund minus an administrative fee applies if you cancel more than five weeks before the test date. When you cancel booking inside the deadline, the provider keeps the administrative fee and returns the balance, so a refund minus admin fee is what you receive.

Cancelling within five weeks usually forfeits most of the fee, because the provider treats a late cancellation as a near-total loss of the seat. Medical cancellations are the exception. If you cancel for a documented health reason and supply medical evidence such as a doctor’s certificate, you may qualify for a larger refund than the standard late rules allow.

What Are the IELTS Reschedule Rules?

What Are the IELTS Reschedule Rules

The IELTS reschedule rules come down to one principle — the timing of your request, not the reason behind it, decides what the change costs. Both providers let you move a booked test, but they cap how freely you can do it and reward early requests. The core reschedule rules are set out below.

  • One transfer per booking. Most centres allow only one transfer of a given booking, so choose the replacement date carefully.
  • The five-week cut-off governs the fee. Move the test more than five weeks ahead and you pay an administrative fee; move it later and the change can become a cancellation.
  • Medical grounds can ease the penalty. A late change made on medical grounds may be handled more leniently than an ordinary late request.
  • Evidence is required for medical claims. You must supply evidence, such as a doctor’s certificate, before a centre applies the medical exception.

How Do You Reschedule the IELTS Speaking Test?

You reschedule Speaking through the same account, choosing a new Speaking slot from the times your test centre offers. The Speaking test sits within your overall booking, so you open the same dashboard you used to book and pick a fresh reschedule slot for that component.

The Speaking test can sometimes move within the same booking. When a centre offers Speaking on a different day from the Listening, Reading and Writing papers, you may be able to shift just the reschedule slot without changing the rest of your test date.

Can You Reschedule Your IELTS at the British Council or IDP?

Yes, both British Council and IDP allow rescheduling via your online account, using the same five-week deadline and administrative fee structure. You sign in to whichever provider you booked with and request the transfer from your test dashboard.

The process is the same for both providers: log in, open the booking, choose a new date, pay any transfer fee, and receive an updated confirmation. Did you book with the British Council?
