If you are planning to move to the United Kingdom to study, work, or live with your family, you will probably need to prove your English language skills. For many, this means taking a special version of the IELTS test called IELTS for UKVI.

But what exactly is it? How is it different from the standard IELTS test? And which one do you need?

It can seem confusing, but it’s actually quite simple. This guide will break down everything you need to know about IELTS for UKVI in plain, easy-to-understand language.

What is UKVI in IELTS?

IELTS for UKVI is an English language test that is approved by the UK Home Office for visa and immigration applications. The “UKVI” part simply stands for UK Visas and Immigration.

Think of it like this: the test itself is the same IELTS test you already know. The content, the format, the questions, and the difficulty level are exactly the same as the standard IELTS.

So, what’s the difference?

The only difference is how the test is administered and reported.

  • Approved Test Centre: You must take the test at a special test centre that is officially approved by the UK Home Office to run IELTS for UKVI tests.
  • Extra Security: These centres have extra video recording and security measures to meet UK Home Office requirements.
  • Different Test Report Form: Your final certificate, called a Test Report Form (TRF), will look slightly different. It will clearly state that you took your test at an approved IELTS for UKVI centre.

This special certificate is what you need to show the UK government that you have met their English language requirements.

How Many Types of IELTS for UKVI Tests Are Available?

There isn’t just one “IELTS for UKVI” test. There are three different versions, and the one you need depends entirely on your reason for moving to the UK.

  1. IELTS Academic for UKVI
  2. IELTS General Training for UKVI
  3. IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, or B1)

Let’s look at who needs each one.

1. IELTS Academic for UKVI

This is the test for people who want to study in the UK at a university.

You will need this test if you are:

  • Applying for an undergraduate degree (like a Bachelor’s degree).
  • Applying for a postgraduate degree (like a Master’s or PhD).
  • Applying for a course that is below degree level (like a pre-sessional course or a foundation program) at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor.

Not sure if your university is a Tier 4 Sponsor?
Always check the official university website or contact their admissions office directly. They will tell you exactly which test you need.

2. IELTS General Training for UKVI

This test is for people who want to move to the UK for reasons other than university study. It focuses on the practical, everyday English skills you will need to live and work in the UK.

You will need this test if you are:

  • Applying to immigrate to the UK.
  • Planning to work in the UK.
  • Enrolling in a training program or course that is below degree level.

3. IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, and B1)

This is a very different kind of test. It does not test reading or writing. It only tests your Speaking and Listening skills.

The test is short (usually 16-22 minutes), and you take it with another test taker. You are graded on your ability to communicate and engage in a conversation. Instead of a band score, you will simply get a Pass or Fail result.

The level you need depends on your specific visa application.

  • IELTS Life Skills A1: You will need this if you are applying for a ‘family of a settled person’ visa, like a spouse or partner visa.
  • IELTS Life Skills A2: This level is required for extending a family, spouse, or partner visa after you have been in the UK for 2.5 years.
  • IELTS Life Skills B1: You will need this if you are applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or citizenship.

How to Prepare for Academic and General Training

Your preparation should be built around practicing all four skills. A balanced study plan is essential for success.
